Morning Roof Fire Extinguished at SUNY Cortland

CORTLAND, NY (12/30/2013)(readMedia)-- A reported fire in an attic mechanical room of a SUNY Cortland academic building forced its evacuation Monday morning. The situation in Old Main was quickly brought under control and no injuries were reported.

Damage caused by the fire, which set off alarms around 9:30 a.m., was limited to a portion of the building's roof. Several nearby emergency crews responded and extinguished the fire quickly from within the attic. Some classroom space located directly below the attic mechanical room experienced water damage when the fire was extinguished, although initial clean-up of that area is expected to wrap up by the end of the day Monday.

The building, which houses classrooms and academic departments within the College's School of Arts and Sciences, will remain unoccupied until further notice while fire investigators work to determine the exact cause of the fire.
