Mott Haven Leaders Hand-Deliver Invitation to Speaker Johnson Urging Him to Visit Proposed Jail Site

The City Council is scheduled to vote Thursday on a plan to build a massive jail in a low-income community of color, but the Speaker has not visited the site.

NEW YORK (10/14/2019) (readMedia)-- Mott Haven Community leaders will hand-deliver an invitation to visit the proposed new Bronx jail site to Council Speaker Corey Johnson's Chelsea office on Tuesday morning. The City Council is scheduled to vote on the proposed plan to build a massive jail in the low-income community of color this Thursday, but the Speaker has never visited the South Bronx Site.

Community leaders will also invite Speaker Johnson to visit an alternative Bronx jail site located near the borough's courthouse, next to the Bronx Hall of Justice--the site that is preferred by community members, Bronx Borough President Diaz and Rep. Serrano.

Invitations were also emailed out Monday to Speaker Johnson as well as to all members of the Council's Land Use Committee, except for Council Member Salamanca, who publicly opposed the plan in the one-and-only Council hearing on the controversial Mott Haven plan held last month.
