MORRISTOWN, NJ (04/15/2011)(readMedia)-- Mount Arlington resident Emily Pomykala, '12, a College of Saint Elizabeth foods and nutrition major, is busy making her life-long dream of becoming a registered dietitian come true, both in and out of the classroom. Not only is Pomykala successfully working toward her bachelor of science degree with future plans for her master's at CSE, she was recently elected national chair of the student advisory committee of the American Dietetic Association, overseeing the national organization's 20,000 student members.
"It is my proudest achievement," says Pomykala.
As the new committee chair, Pomykala has already set goals. "One of my goals is to promote leadership and service within the student membership category. The world needs more dietitians to translate the science of food and nutrition into practical health solutions."
She also seeks to diversify the dietary workforce by providing mentorships to a varied student population. "The face of America is changing," says Pomykala. "We need to promote a diverse workforce."
Her third goal is currently a popular one – combating childhood obesity. She is currently collaborating with ADA staff on the Kids Eat Right Campaign, associated with Let's Move, First Lady Michele Obama's nationwide initiative to promote healthy choices.
Pomykala's present career path began at the County College of Morris, where the program dovetailed beautifully with CSE. "The program there was tailored to CSE, and I was able to transfer all of my credits. Every class and every experience I have had at CSE has given me a new tool, so I could develop personally and professionally."
While Pomykala credits CSE for helping her achieve academically, she emphasized the importance of taking full advantage of all opportunities. "You need to take the initiative. Do your homework; get involved with professional organizations like the ADA that are key to professional success. It is up to you."
That's great advice from someone well on her way to achieving her dreams.
