Mystery Sack Creations Prove Victorious at Iowa State Fair

DES MOINES, IA (08/20/2014)(readMedia)-- The Celebrity, Adult and Youth divisions of the Mystery Sack contest were judged Saturday at the 2014 Iowa State Fair.

Liz Stewart and Eddie Hatfield of KJJY 92.5 took first place in the Celebrity division. Robert Rees of 98.3 The Torch secured second place, and Tony Conrad, also of KJJY 92.5, received third place.

Jan Trometer of Jamaica won first place in the Adult division. Michelle Burgmeier of Lockridge placed second, and Heather Kennedy of Birmingham claimed third place.

In the Youth division, Alexander Hilgerson of West Des Moines won first place. Grace Whitlow of Johnston claimed second place, and Tyler Davis, also of Johnston, nabbed third place.

Each contestant was only allowed to bring a spoon and three fresh or dried herbs. They were each given a mystery sack with various products and had 30 minutes to prepare a creation. Entries were judged on taste and use of product.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There were 226 divisions, 883 classes and over 10,500 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging was held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.
