NEW YORK STATE BAR ASSOCIATION HOSTS MAY 3 SEMINAR ON THE CHANGING LANDSCAPE OF THE LEGAL PROFESSION

ALBANY, NY (04/29/2016)(readMedia)-- "The Rise of Nonlawyer Entrepreneurs Providing Legal Services" is among the topics of a May 3 symposium in Albany sponsored by the New York State Bar Association.

Panelists will examine how technology has changed the practice of law, the emergence of nonlawyer corporations delivering legal services, and the impact on the public and the legal profession.

Dan Lear, director of industry relations, Avvo; Chas Rampenthal, general counsel, LegalZoom; Miles S. Winder, III, president, New Jersey Bar Association; and David P. Miranda, president, New York State Bar Association, will participate. Vincent E. Doyle, III, past president of the New York State Bar Association, will serve as moderator.

The symposium, entitled "The Changing Landscape of the Legal Profession," also will explore delivery of legal services to low-income individuals and the future of lawyer referral services with two additional panels:

• "Addressing the Justice Gap: Nonlawyer Initiatives to Address the Needs of the Underserved." Panelists: Judy Perry Martinez, chair of American Bar Association Commission on the Future of Legal Services; Roger Juan Maldonado, Balber Pickard Maldonado & Van Der Tuin; Steve Crossland, Crossland Law Office; and Joann Macri, NYS Office of Indigent Legal Services. Moderator: Glenn Lau-Kee, immediate past president of the New York State Bar Association.

• "Lawyer Referral Service: What Does the Future Hold?" Panelists: Chad Burton, CEO, CuroLegal: William H. Pugh V, president, Pennsylvania Bar Association; Stacey Whiteley, managing director of legal and community services, New York State Bar Association; George Wolff, executive director, Legal Referral Service, New York City Bar Association; and Robert Aicher, CEO, Chief Zeekbeek. Moderator: Claire P. Gutekunst, president-elect, New York State Bar Association.
