LATHAM, NY (01/10/2017)(readMedia)-- New York Army National Guard Capt. Raymond Plante, a Plattsburgh resident, took command of Detachment 2 of A Company 1st Battalion 224th Security and Support battalion during a ceremony here on Sunday, Jan. 8.

The unit operates two UH-72 Lakota helicopters which are used to support local law enforcement and respond to state emergencies.

Plante, age 28, was previously commander of D Company 3rd Battalion 142nd Aviation, the battalion's maintenance company.

He took command from Capt. Andrew Shaw who is moving onto a new assignment with the Headquarters Company of 3rd Battalion 142nd Aviation at Ronkonkoma.

Plante enlisted in the New York Army National Guard in 2006 and served in the 107th Military Police Company. He earned his commission through the Reserve Officer Training Program at SUNY Plattsburgh in 2010 and assigned as a UH-60 platoon leader in A Company 3rd Battalion 142nd Aviation. He graduated from flight school at Fort Rucker, Alabama in 2011.

Plante is currently rated as Pilot in Command in the UH-60 Blackhawk nearing 700 hours of flight time.

He served in Kuwait in 2013 and 2014 in support of operations in the Central Command area of operations.

He also served during the New York National Guard response to Superstorm Sandy in 2012 and Assistant Operations Officer for the Domestic All Hazards Response Team when the Troy-based 42nd Infantry Division had responsibility for that deployable element.

Plante holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from SUNY Plattsburgh and is General Manager for Verizon Wireless in South Burlington, Vermont in civilian life.

He resides in Plattsburgh with his girlfriend Emily Adams.
