NYISO Announces New Wind Generation Record

RENSSELAER, NY (12/20/2024) (readMedia)-- The New York Independent System Operator today reported that a new record for hourly wind generation was set on Monday, December 16, 2024.

During the 11 p.m. hour, 2,309 megawatts were generated from 30 wind power facilities serving 14.4% of energy demand. One megawatt of electricity can supply between 800 to 1,000 homes.

The previous record for hourly wind generation was 2,213 megawatts, set on November 8, 2024, during the 1 p.m. hour.

"We've seen an appreciable increase in the contribution of wind generation to the state's energy mix the last several years," said Rich Dewey, President and CEO of the New York Independent System Operator. "Wind has low operating costs, is clean and renewable, and can help reduce our reliance on conventional generation. We'll watch for this trend to continue as we conduct our future grid planning studies."

Doreen M. Harris, President and CEO of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority said, "This is another example of the critical role wind generation continues to play in New York's transition to a zero-emission grid. We will continue to see more of these records as clean energy from large-scale renewables will continue to propel New York forward as we build upon our thriving, green economy."
