NYISO Debuts Enhanced System Conditions Page
RENSSELAER, NY (02/04/2025) (readMedia)-- The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) has enhanced its online System Conditions page, incorporating a grid alert system to communicate when energy supplies drop below certain thresholds and conservation measures may be necessary.
NYISO's Systems Conditions page can be viewed at www.nyiso.com/system-conditions.
The NYISO's enhanced System Conditions page establishes a four-stage alert system to communicate operational changes on the bulk electric system for public awareness.
- Normal Grid Conditions. In this stage, adequate supplies of electricity are available meet demand on the grid.
- Energy Watch. In this stage, operating reserves have dropped below 2,620 megawatts (MW) and are not expected to recover for at least 60 minutes but demand on the grid can still be met.
- Energy Warning. In this stage, there is a potential to enter emergency operations due to operating reserves falling below 1,965 MW and are not expected to recover for at least 30 minutes.
- Energy Emergency. In this stage, NYISO has entered into emergency operations as operating reserves have fallen below 1,310 MW and are not expected to recover for at least 30 minutes. Controlled outages may be necessary to preserve the bulk electric system.
In addition, the NYISO may issue Weather Watch alerts if forecasted weather conditions such as heat waves or cold snaps could impact grid operations.
