NYISO Releases Indian Point Energy Center Retirement Analysis

RENSSELAER, NY (12/13/2017) (readMedia)-- In a report analyzing the retirement of the Indian Point Energy Center (IPEC), the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) determined there will not be a system reliability need following the deactivation of IPEC Units 2 & 3, assuming that sufficient replacement sources of power are added within the Lower Hudson Valley.

The Generator Deactivation Assessment report released today focuses on the reliability impacts to the electric system and assesses whether any reliability needs will arise over a five-year period (2018-2023) as a result of the deactivation of IPEC Unit 2 in 2020 and Unit 3 in 2021.

The NYISO's federally-regulated tariffs detail specific actions that must be undertaken by a supplier seeking to deactivate, and requires the NYISO, in coordination with local utilities, to perform this detailed assessment. Each study performed by the NYISO considers the current and expected state of New York's power system over the five-year period as forecasted demand, the fuel resource mix, and transmission and distribution system elements are constantly changing.
