NYSDA Veterans Defense Program Director Receives Award as Program Gets Underway

ALBANY, NY (05/02/2014)(readMedia)-- The New York State Defenders Association congratulates Gary Horton, Director of NYSDA's Veterans Defense Program, on his receipt of the Genesee County Bar Association's "Unsung Hero Award." The award was presented to Horton, former Genesee County Public Defender, at the Annual Law Day Observance and Awards Dinner in Batavia in recognition of his "commitment in providing quality legal services to indigent clients throughout all of the Courts in Genesee County."

NYSDA announced the launch of its new veteran's initiative, and Horton's hiring as the Program's Director, last month.

The skills and experience that Horton and the project's new Legal Director, Art Cody, bring to NYSDA's Veterans Defense Program bring great promise to the new initiative. The program's goal is to bring about more informed representation of military personnel and veterans who become involved in state criminal or family court matters, focusing on how military service may have contributed to behaviors that lead such clients into court and how to effectively address clients' needs in a way that benefits them and furthers justice.
