HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (09/13/2013)(readMedia)-- At Opening Convocation on Tuesday, September 10, Nathaniel Stuart Shepherd, a senior at Hampden-Sydney College, received the President's Award for Academic Excellence in Social Sciences.

A Venable Scholar, Nate serves as President of the Interfraternity Council, as President of the social fraternity Sigma Nu, and as a Student Court Advisor. He is a member of Habitat for Humanity, the Society of '91 leadership program, and the honor society Phi Sigma Iota (foreign languages). A mathematical economics and Spanish major, Nate is a graduate of Athens Drive High School and is the son of Lucy B. Alexander of Cary and Richard E. Shepherd of Chapel Hill.

A private college for men, Hampden-Sydney is ranked in the top 100 nationally among liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report. The College is known for its liberal arts curriculum, the Honor Code which stresses individual and collective responsibility, and a focus on the education of young men.
