National Journal's Managing Editor of Politics to speak on 'Politics and Social Media'

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (01/28/2011)(readMedia)-- Managing Editor of Politics, National Journal, Kathy Kiely will be the next speaker in the 2010-2011 Flagler College Forum on Government and Public Policy.

Kiely will speak Feb. 17, at 7 p.m., in the Flagler College Auditorium. Her topic will be "Politics & Social Media: Are We Opening Our Laptops But Closing Our Minds?"

In the course of a more than 30-year career as a newspaper reporter, Kiely has survived Three Mile Island, interviewed Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in a graveyard, taken a sledge hammer to the Berlin Wall and traveled to the border of Afghanistan with the Texas congressman later made famous in the movie "Charlie's War."

Prior to joining National Journal, Kiely covered Congress and national politics for USA Today.

She has covered every presidential campaign since 1980. She worked for the Pittsburgh Press (her hometown newspaper), The Houston Post, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and the New York Daily News before joining the staff of the "nation's newspaper" in 1998.

She's a 1977 cum laude graduate of Princeton University. In 2008, Kiely obtained a master's degree in interactive journalism from American University. She has taught journalism at both her alma maters. She was a Knight Fellow at Stanford University in 1990 and 1991.

For more than 30 years, the Flagler College Forum on Government and Public Policy has invited nationally recognized journalists and commentators to St. Augustine to discuss issues of importance in regional, state and federal government.

All forums take place in the Flagler College Auditorium, 14 Granada St., at 7 p.m. Forums are free and open to the public, but seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign language interpreters are provided.
