ALBANY, NY (03/25/2009)(readMedia)-- Adding to the growing call by New Yorker businesses, consumer groups and labor unions to reject bottle deposit expansion, the National Supermarket Association (NSA) representing 400 independent supermarkets, principally in New York City, has sent a letter to New York's legislative leaders and elected officials urging them to reject bottle law expansion as a means to raise money for the State budget or improve the environment.

In its letter to elected officials, the NSA stated, "At a time when supermarkets' closing in urban areas is an epidemic, we urge you to reject this measure and support our communities."

Governor Paterson's bottle bill expansion proposal will result in cost increases to most beverages -- as much as 70% more for a case of some drinks. Increasing the cost of doing business in New York State will, ultimately, negatively impact the job security of thousands of New Yorkers.

Earlier this month the NAACP also urged Governor Paterson and the legislature to consider alternatives to expanding bottle deposits in order to make a significant environmental difference without hurting average New Yorkers or businesses.
