ROCHESTER, NY (04/12/2013)(readMedia)-- The Wellness and Rehabilitation Institute at Nazareth College to serve as a national model for healthcare education for hands-on training of the next generation of nurses and allied health professionals, while providing clinical facilities that serve the greater Rochester and western New York area.

Nazareth College President Daan Braveman announced the Wellness and Rehabilitation Institute at Nazareth College today thanks to a commitment of $6.5 million in gifts from Larry and Nancy Peckham, Drs. Dawn and Jacques Lipson, and an anonymous donor who are strong local supporters of this next generation health care initiative.

The $16.5 million Institute, set to open in fall 2014, physically expands on the existing educational and clinical facilities of Nazareth's School of Health and Human Services, dedicated to nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech language pathology, social work, creative arts therapy (music and art) as well as pre-medical and pre-dental studies. Combining these professional programs with on-campus teaching clinic facilities sets Nazareth apart on a national level. "The Wellness and Rehabilitation Institute will extend our leadership regionally and nationally in providing education and opportunities for research and development in a broad array of health disciplines while serving the wellness and rehabilitation needs of the local community," said Shirley Szekeres, dean of the School of Health and Human Services.

The Wellness and Rehabilitation Institute serves as one of the foundations of Nazareth's $45 million capital campaign, the Campaign for College and Community, which was publicly announced today at a kick-off celebration.

"The Institute will provide affordable wellness, rehabilitative, and related educational services to children and adults with varying abilities and needs who are underserved or require supplemental services. Here, our students will provide these needed services under the supervision of trained, professional faculty, creating a unique environment where our students gain experience while our clients get the treatments they need," said President Braveman. "In addition this expansion enables Nazareth College to provide thousands of qualified graduates who will fill regional and national health care jobs over the coming decade."
