ROCHESTER, NY (09/25/2014)(readMedia)-- Bronze-cast sculptures by Geneva artist Ted Aub will be on display at the Nazareth College Arts Center Gallery October 3-31, 2014, with an Opening Reception Friday, October 3, from 5-7 p.m.

Perhaps best known for his 800-pound sculpture of Elizabeth Blackwell (1994), the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States, the majority of Aub's work is what the artist describes as irreal, or resembling a dream. "I think of my work as a whimsical but paradoxical marriage of clarity and enigma," Aub said in a prepared statement. "As in dreams, content seems both rational and irrational. My work often deals with dualities such as these, and the figure holds interest for me, in part, because of the metaphor imbedded in the symmetry that is the natural bifurcation of the body. The implicit line of division is emphasized by way of the mirroring of the body parts and facial features along with the prosthetic treatment of the hairstyles and other external ornamentation. If the sculpture has an air of silliness there is also an undercurrent of seriousness; my hope is that this desired confusion is also compelling."

A Hobart and William Smith Colleges professor of art and architecture for three decades, Aub has been awarded numerous public commissions in the United States and Korea, and has exhibited extensively, including in six Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibitions at the Memorial Art Gallery; he has been a prize winner in three.

Gallery hours are: Sunday and Tuesday-Thursday, noon-5pm; Friday-Saturday, noon-8pm. For additional information, visit naz.edu/art/arts-center-gallery or call the automated information line: 585-389-5073.
