Nazareth College Music Departments presents October 2016 Ensemble and Faculty/Guest Artist Recital Series

Featuring world-renowned Nazareth College faculty members and guest artists

ROCHESTER, NY (09/27/2016)(readMedia)-- The Nazareth College Music Department presents its annual ensemble and faculty/guest artist recital series. Each performance is free and open to the public.

The department's events for October are as follows:

October 2, 2016 at 3pm, Wilmot Hall

Wilmont Brass Quintet and Friends

Wilmont Brass Quintet and Friends features Brett Long and Jared Chase, trumpets; Colleen Wolf, French horn; Steven Zugelder, trombone; and Jeremy Stoner, tuba. The Wilmot Brass Quintet performs two major brass sextet chamber works for brass quintet: Ingolf Dahl's Music for Brass Instruments, a distinctly American work incorporating multiple musical styles, and Oskar Böhme's Trumpet Sextet.

October 8, 2016 at 1:30pm, Wilmot Hall

MTNA/NYSMTA Commissioned Composer 2016

This is the world premiere performance of the new work by Nazareth College Music Department faculty Dr. Octabio Vazquez, and will occur during the NYS Music Teachers Association's Conference at Nazareth. The performance of his piece for alto saxophone and piano will feature faculty Saxophonist Dr. Chisato Eda Marling and faculty pianist Dr. Sarah Rhee-Tirre. This work was commissioned by NYSMTA in conjunction with the Music Teachers National Association as part of the national Commissioned Composers program. Dr. Vazquez will speak about the gestation of his new work and take questions after the performance.

Faculty Recital: Jacob Ertl

Jacob Ertl, pianist and faculty member will perform as the featured guest artist of the NYS Music Teachers Association's Conference at Nazareth. He will perform music by Ravel, Rzewski, Albinez, and Stravinsky/Agosti.

October 15, 2016 at 7:30pm, Wilmot Hall

Raymond Shiner Jazz Award Big Band

The Raymond Shiner Jazz Award Big Band, conducted by Steve Frank, will be joined by guest artist, Joe Carello (alto saxophone). Donations will be accepted to the Raymond Shiner Jazz Award for Nazareth College music majors with talent and motivation in the area of jazz.

October 16, 2016 at 3pm, Wilmot Hall

Guest Recital: Richard Becker

Richard Becker, pianist and guest artist from the University of Richmond will perform three of his own pieces and the complete Twenty-Four Preludes, Op. 28 of Chopin.

October 21, 2016 at 7:30pm, Wilmot Hall

On Rocks, Radios, and Reversed Roles: Music for Tenor and Clarinet

Faculty members Matthew Valverde, tenor, and Tiffany Valvo, clarinet, join Eastman vocal coach Ksenia Leletkina, piano for a performance with a twist. The three will perform works by Schubert, Cooke, Kalliwoda, and Salazar that were originally set for soprano, clarinet, and piano have been re-cast for tenor.

October 23, 2016 at 3pm, Wilmot Hall

Guitar Celebration

Petar Kodzas, guitar faculty member will perform works by Bach, Giuliani, Tarrega, Torroba, Lauro, and Gnattali. This is a celebration of important milestones in the history of guitar in a program that resembles sections of various musical forms.

October 25, 2016 at 7:30pm, Linehan Chapel

The Heart of Europe

Il Giardino d'Amore Baroque Orchestra offers a program in celebration of the 1050th anniversary of the Baptism of Poland. This is the third visit to Rochester by this acclaimed Baroque orchestra. This concert is co-sponsored by the Skalny Center for Polish and Central European Studies at the University of Rochester.

Guest Recital: Herbert Smith

Join trumpeter Herbert Smith for a concert as part of the Nazareth College Brass Day. Herb has been in the Rochester Philharmonic for over 18 years and has performed in Carnegie Hall with the Rochester Philharmonic as well as a soloist on a recital in Carnegie, the year 2008. He regularly plays with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Chitaqua Institute Symphony Orchestra and the Portland Maine Symphony, as well as being a soloist, and chamber musician around the greater Rochester Area.
