ROCHESTER, NY (04/12/2010)(readMedia)-- Nazareth College is pleased to announce that Stella Plutino-Calabrese has been awarded with the IACC Educator of the Year by the Italian American Community Center's 13th Annual Women of the Year Awards.

Plutino-Calabrese, of Pittsford, is a native speaker of Italian who grew up in Melito Porto Salvo in the province of Reggio Calabria, Italy. She earned a bachelor's degree in economics with a minor in Spanish from the University of Rochester, a master's degree in information technology from Rochester Institute of Technology, and holds a doctorate in modern languages in Italian and Spanish from Middlebury College, having written her thesis on Italian writer and holocaust survivor Primo Levi and the internment camps in Italy.

Plutino-Calabrese teaches Italian and is the director of the Casa Italiana at Nazareth College. Under her leadership, the Casa has expanded its educational programs and has attracted a growing population to enjoy the Casa's offerings including classes, seminars, workshops, exhibits, and other events. Her primary area of research has been contemporary Italian literature and Italian cinema. Her current scholarly work focuses on immigration, the Italian American experience, women's studies, and the Holocaust.

Founded in 1924, Nazareth College is a coeducational college with undergraduate and graduate studies in the liberal arts and sciences and professional programs in health and human services, education, and management. The College is located on 150 scenic acres near Rochester, New York, and currently enrolls approximately 2,000 undergraduate and 800 graduate students.
