Nazareth Professor Honored by Professional Nursing Organization
ROCHESTER, NY (11/12/2009)(readMedia)-- Nazareth College is proud to announce that Katherine Detherage, associate professor of nursing, has been honored as a Founder's Day Award recipient by the Beta Chi Chi chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. is a professional association for registered professional nurses and nursing students. Detherage is honored for her outstanding work in the nursing field and her passion for service. Recipients are chosen for their planning skills, patience and support in the nursing field.
Detherage, a resident of the city of Rochester, N.Y., earned her bachelor's of nursing from Spalding College School of Nursing in Louisville, Kentucky and her master's from the University of Kentucky in Lexington. She earned her doctorate from Boston College and then came to Rochester as a Robert Wood Johnson Fellow at the University of Rochester School of Nursing. Her work brought her to serve as President of the Genesee Valley Nurses Association, and to date is the first and only African-American to do so. Over the years Detherage has served on many boards such as the Catholic Family Center, Rochester Health Commission, and the McCree McCuller Wellness Center. Detherage received Nazareth College's Civic Engagement Award for outstanding volunteer service in April 2009 and most recently, she served as Principle Investigator of a HRSA funded grant, "WE CARE" (Welcoming Everyone to Culturally Appropriate RN Education), a program for recruiting underrepresented nursing students.
The Chi Eta Phi Sorority represents many cultures and diverse backgrounds and currently have more than 8,000 registered members in graduate, undergraduate and other chapters worldwide. Their mission is to provide service for humanity and to elevate the plane of nursing to increase the nursing profession.
Founded in 1924, Nazareth College is a coeducational college with undergraduate and graduate studies in the liberal arts and sciences and professional programs in health and human services, education, and management. The College is located on 150 scenic acres near Rochester, New York, and currently enrolls approximately 2,000 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students. Nazareth has a strong commitment to experience-based learning and civic engagement. In the past decade, Nazareth has produced 18 Fulbright recipients and two Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowships.
