WASHINGTON, DC (04/23/2012)(readMedia)-- Tele-Press Details
Who:
Common Cause President Bob Edgar
Attorney Eric R. Havian
What:
Common Cause will announce new evidence involving the activities and inner workings of the American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC, a secretive, corporate-backed front group through which corporate leaders join with state legislators to write – and then pass in state houses from coast to coast -- "model" bills that benefit corporations, often at the expense of American taxpayers.
When:
Monday, April 23 at noon ET
Join:
Dial (877)317-2314, and ask for conference ID# 74236016
In the wake of the Trayvon Martin shooting in Florida, and ALEC's connection to the "Stand Your Ground" gun law that for weeks protected the teen-ager's killer, ALEC has been under intense media and public scrutiny. At least 11 major corporations, including McDonald's, Wendy's, Coca Cola and PepsiCo, have announced their departure from ALEC. A large trove of ALEC records obtained by Common Cause will be a major focus of this call; the documents raise new questions, including legal issues, about ALEC's activities.
