New Mazda CX-5 Gets More Highway MPGs than Any SUV
Automaker's SKYACTIV Technology Earns Compact SUV Best-In-Class Fuel Economy
QUINCY, MASS. (01/23/2012)(readMedia)-- When Mazda designed its new CX-5 compact crossover SUV, it examined every component's impact on fuel economy, whether it was the engine, transmission, body or chassis. That approach has paid off, with the 2013 Mazda CX-5 recently estimated by the EPA to have better highway fuel economy than any SUV on the market, including hybrid models.
Scheduled to arrive at Mazda dealerships this spring, the Mazda CX-5 can return up to 26 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway when driven with a manual transmission. That highway rating beats out the most fuel-efficient hybrid SUV on the market, the 34-mpg Ford Escape. Regardless of transmission or drivetrain configuration, the Mazda CX-5 has secured both the top city and highway fuel economy in the non-hybrid compact SUV class.
"A hybrid powertrain can be very effective in improving overall fuel efficiency, but Mazda found a way to avoid electric motors altogether and maintain its signature performance in the CX-5," said Phil Ternullo, general manager of Quirk Mazda, a Greater Boston Mazda dealer. "They made the new gas engine lighter for fuel efficiency, but gave it the highest compression ratio out there, meaning it puts out as much power as possible per gallon of gas."
Though the 2012 Mazda3 features some SKYACTIV components, the 2013 CX-5 is the first Mazda to be built entirely with the automaker's entire SKYACTIV technology suite, resulting in significant improvements in fuel efficiency. Its SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter engine outputs 155 horsepower, which is delivered to the wheels through either a SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual or SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission. With the use of strong yet lightweight materials in those parts, as well as in the body and chassis, the CX-5 gains an efficiency advantage as the lightest vehicle in its class.
In addition to being the debut vehicle for the entire SKYACTIV suite, the CX-5 is also the first Mazda to introduce the automaker's new Kodo, or Soul in Motion, design philosophy. The CX-5's aggressive grille, prominent shoulder line and short rear and front overhangs all showcase elements of the Kodo design. Inside, meanwhile, the crossover features a standard 5.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and iPod connectivity that will appeal to technophiles, as well as an optional 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat that can open up 65.4 cubic-feet of cargo space.
While it is not even on sale yet, the 2013 Mazda CX-5 is already taking home awards. Recently named the Autobytel 2012 Crossover of the Year, the CX-5 was praised by the auto advisor for its "sporty" and "stylish" nature, but its SKYACTIV weight- and fuel-saving technologies were what set the vehicle apart. Overall, Autobytel found that the CX-5 presents buyers with a crossover that rolls style, driving fun and fuel efficiency into one package.
"The Mazda CX-5 is built for a new generation of drivers who want their fuel-efficient vehicle to be stylish, not boring," added Ternullo. "Mazda's SKYACTIV technology means buyers don't have to choose between something aesthetically pleasing and something fuel efficient. They can have both in the CX-5."
