LATHAM, NY (12/20/2013)(readMedia)-- New York Army National Guard Captain Katie McGovern, a Saratoga Springs resident and a veteran of the Iraq War, has assumed command of the 42nd Infantry Division Headquarters Battalion's Intelligence and Sustainment Company.
McGovern, who enlisted in the New York Army National Guard in 1998, is also a full-time employee of the Guard, working as personnel officer.
McGovern served as an intelligence analyst in the 642nd Military Intelligence Battalion and in the 42nd Infantry Division as an enlisted Soldier. She attend the rank of Sgt. 1st Class before receiving a direct commission in Military Intelligence as a 2nd Lieutenant in 2009.
She deployed to Tikrit, Iraq in the intelligence section of the 42nd Infantry Division in 2005.
She served as the executive officer of the Intelligence and Sustainment Company before taking command on Dec. 7.
McGovern holds a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts from Excelsior College. She is a graduate of the Army's Basic Office Leadership Course and the Company Pre-Command Course.
Her military awards include the Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Iraq Campaing Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, NCO Professonal Development Ribbon and the Overseas Service Ribbon.
She is married to Master Sgt. Michael Schin, who also serves in the New York Army National Guard.
