LATHAM, NY (09/11/2018) New York Army National Guard Master Sgt. John Batza, a Watervliet resident, has retired after 31 years of service.

Batza was recognized during an August 24 retirement ceremony at Watervliet Arsenal.

Batza joined the New York Army National Guard in 1980 served in the Army National Guard and Army Reserve until 1986. He left the service and re-enlisted in the New York Army National Guard in 1991.

Batza joined the Active Guard and Reserve program in 2000. He served in a number of military personnel administrative positions, most recently as the non-commissioned officer in charge of the New York National Guard's military personnel database.

Batza's awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon.
