BUFFALO, NY (12/07/2016)(readMedia)-- New York Army National Guard Lt. Col. Alan Bookmiller completed a long career of military service December 4, 2016 with a retirement ceremony held at the New York State Armory on Connecticut Street here.

Col. David Martinez, the Director of the New York National Guard's Intelligence and Security Directorate presented Bookmiller with the Army's Meritorious Service Medal as well as the New York State Long and Faithful Service Award for his years of service.

Bookmiller began his career in October of 1987 when he joined the U.S. Army Reserve and served with the 402nd Civil Affairs Company, in Tonawanda, New York from 1987 until his commission in 1989.

He received his officer's commission through the Army Reserve Officer's Training Program (ROTC) at Canisius College where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1989.

Since his graduation from Military Intelligence Officer Basic Course, Fort Huachuca, Arizona, Bookmiller served as the Tactical Intelligence Officer, 3rd Brigade, 42nd Infantry Division; Tactical Surveillance Officer, 42nd Infantry Division, Battalion S2, 1st Battalion, 127the Armor Battalion, S2 3rd Brigade, 42nd Infantry Division, S2 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Deputy G2, 42nd Infantry Division (2 times), MNOT Training Division Branch Chief (E&E Team) and Deputy, Director of the Intelligence and Security Directorate (J2), Joint Forces Headquarters-New York (JFHQ-NY).

His military education includes, Command and General Staff School (CGSS) Intermediate Level Education, Combined Arms and Services Staff School (CAS3), Military Intelligence Officer Advance Course, and the Military Intelligence Officer Basic Course.

His awards consist of Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Mobilization Device, the Army Service Ribbon, Reserve Overseas Training Ribbon, NATO Medal (Afghanistan), Joint Meritorious Unit Award and the NYS Commendation Medal.

His military education includes Command and General Staff School, Intermediate Level Education, Combined Arms and Services Staff School, Military Intelligence Officer Advance Course, and the Military Intelligence Officer Basic Course.

Bookmiller is married to his wife Bernadette and the couple has three children, Kathleen, Emily and Ethan.
