New York Bar Foundation Awards Hon. Charles L. Brieant, Jr. Fellowship To Andrew G. Owen

ALBANY, NY (05/11/2010)(readMedia)-- Andrew Galway Owen of New York City, a student at Fordham University School of Law, has been chosen as this year's Hon. Charles L. Brieant, Jr. Fellow. Mr. Owen was selected by Hon. Loretta A. Preska, Chief United States District Court Judge for the Southern District of New York, to serve as a judicial intern in the court during the summer 2010. The $5,000 fellowship award, administered by The New York Bar Foundation, will be applied to Mr. Owen's tuition or other appropriate law school-related expense during his third year of law school.

Mr. Owen, a 2006 graduate of Georgetown University, is pursuing a J.D. degree and expects to graduate from law school in 2011. This past year he served on the Kaufman Committee of Fordham's Moot Court Board, where he will continue next year as an associate editor, and also serves on the Board of Student Advisors. Additionally, he serves on the Fordham Journal of Corporate and Financial Law as an associate editor and was a Section Representative to the Student Bar Association during his first year of law school. He studied abroad as a participant in Fordham's Dublin and Belfast International Law Program during the summer 2009.

Mr. Owen earned a B.S.B.A. degree in Marketing at Georgetown, where he was a member of the Undergraduate Marketing Association and served on the Journal of International Affairs. He is a graduate of New York's Regis High School, an all scholarship Jesuit institution, and is currently completing a legal internship in the Criminal Division of the United States Attorney's Office in the Southern District of New York.

In addition, Mr. Owen worked as a research assistant to Professor John Pfaff at Fordham Law School during the spring 2009 and previously worked for three years in business development at Fulcra Worldwide (formerly Lincoln Group) in New York, Washington, DC, and Dubai, United Arab Emirates. During the summers of 2007 and 2008, he was a trip leader for Longacre Expeditions in Ireland and Oregon, guiding outdoor activities including sea kayaking, rock climbing and snowboarding.

The fellowship has been established to commemorate the selfless dedication of Judge Charles L. Brieant, Jr. to public service and the federal courts. Judge Brieant, who passed away in 2008, was appointed a United States District Court Judge for the Southern District of New York in 1971. He served on the court for 37 years and as the court's Chief Judge for seven of those years. The creation of the fellowship was spearheaded by the law clerks and judicial interns who served in Judge Brieant's chambers during his years of judicial service. Proudly known as members of Judge Brieant's Judicial Family, the law clerks and judicial interns all share the commitment of preserving the memory of Judge Brieant and passing on his wit and wisdom to those who will serve as the Judge Brieant Fellows in the years to come.
