New York City Attorney Karen I. Wu Named State Bar Outstanding Young Lawyer for 2012

ALBANY, NY (01/27/2012)(readMedia)-- Karen I. Wu, a New York City attorney who complements her work in nonprofit law by volunteering her legal services to the poor, has been named the recipient of the New York State Bar Association's Outstanding Young Lawyer Award for 2012.
Sponsored by the Young Lawyers Section, the annual award is given to a young attorney with a distinguished record of service to the legal profession and the community-at-large. It was presented to Wu January on 26 in New York City during the Bar Association's Annual Meeting.
Among Wu's many community activities is Open Hands Legal Services, of which she is a founding member, officer and volunteer attorney. She also is active in the Taiwan Mission Foundation, New York Christian Legal Society, American Cancer Society's Asian Initiatives Division and Asian American Bar Association of New York.
"It is very meaningful for me to be able to directly serve individuals in need, in addition to having an already rewarding career serving nonprofit organizations," said Wu (Perlman & Perlman).
"The dedication Karen Wu has shown as an attorney and concerned citizen provides a shining example to young professionals. She is truly a leader and we are extremely proud to call her a colleague," said Section Chairman James A. Barnes of Albany (Burke & Casserly).
Wu is a graduate of Wellesley College and Brooklyn Law School. At Perlman & Perlman, she specializes in finance, contracts, marketing, trademark/copyrights and regulatory matters for commercial and non-profit clients.
She has written about fund-raising regulation and tax compliance, and has conducted workshops for the nonprofit community. During high school and college, she was a national champion table tennis player and one of 12 women who participated in the 1996 and 2000 U.S. Olympic table tennis trials.
The 77,000-member New York State Bar Association is the largest voluntary state bar association in the nation. It was founded in 1876.
