New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Moves to Close Down Statewide Pistol License Database
TROY, NY (06/14/2010)(readMedia)-- The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association has taken steps to close down an on-line database of some 600,000 pistol licensees throughout the State. At present the Web site is not consistently available; it will go off-line and remain so forever if the NYSRPA has anything to say about it.
The irresponsibility of such a database is blatant and undeniable. When the Web site is available all one has to do to generate a list of pistol license holders is to type in a ZIP code and request a search. The list quickly appears, complete with names and addresses. It is also possible to search by name. Thus, the database provides "one-stop shopping" for criminals intent on acquiring handguns: personal information at their fingertips, and potential victims right in their neighborhoods! The NYSRPA does not know who is responsible for placing New York's pistol licensees at risk, but we pledge to each and every one of them that we will protect their ability to exercise their second amendment rights without the danger of their names and addresses being placed in the public domain.
