SPRINGFIELD, MA (11/28/2011)(readMedia)-- Nicolas St. John of Troy, NY, was recently named a recipient of the Skookum Award, an honor presented by Western New England University's Alumni Association. The Skookum is awarded to students who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in all their endeavors: academics, co-curricular activities, sports, and community service. "Skookum" is a Native American Chinook Indian word meaning "excellence." St. John was one of 15 outstanding seniors to receive the award during the University's Homecoming Weekend.

A Biomedical Engineering major, St. John has been an active member of the campus community, having participated in Residence Hall Association, serving as a Peer Advisor, and as Publicity Chair and Vice President of the sexual assault prevention group One in Four. He is also Vice President of the Western New England Engineering World Health chapter and the Biomedical Engineering Society student chapter. When not in the classroom, St. John keeps busy on with the University's Rugby club team.
