Non-Chocolate Desserts Claim State Fair Awards

DES MOINES, IA (08/23/2023) (readMedia)-- Jeffrey King of Newton won first place and a $50 cash award in the Desserts for Lou Sipolt competition, judged Sunday, August 13, at the 2023 Iowa State Fair.

Jenna Brady of Runnells claimed second place and $25. Jordyn Shipley of Des Moines earned third place and $10.

Judges also awarded Honorable Mention to Fred Abraham of Cedar Falls.

Contestants were challenged to create an award-worthy non-chocolate dessert.

Entries were judged on taste and presentation.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 138 divisions, 695 classes and over 6,800 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center.
