Northampton Community College student honored as 2018 Newman Civic Fellow

BETHLEHEM, PA (03/06/2018) Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education, has announced the 268 students who will make up the organization's 2018 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows, including Northampton Community College's own Jesse Lewis of Cresco, PA.

Lewis is a fist year general studies/veterinary technician intent major, with a career goal of becoming a veterinarian. Lewis has volunteered weekly for the past four years at his local veterinary clinic. Through these experiences, he became passionate about a career in veterinary science. As an apprentice falconer, he helps to preserve the many populations of birds of prey. Lewis volunteers in his local community supporting the fire department. He is a member of the P.A.T.H (Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health) study, where he assists in research assessments that address the use of tobacco and its effects on our health. Lewis is a sitting member on the Board of Directors of the Chazz Foundation which is dedicated to rescuing and re-homing German Shepherds. He supports and promotes this organization by setting up community events to raise money and awareness about the breed.

We are very proud of all that he has accomplished, and congratulate him on the distinguished honor of being named a Newman Civic Fellow," says Dr. Mark Erickson, president of NCC.

The Newman Civic Fellowship, named for Campus Compact co-founder Frank Newman, is a one-year experience emphasizing personal, professional, and civic growth. Through the fellowship, Campus Compact provides a variety of learning and networking opportunities, including a national conference of Newman Civic Fellows in partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. The fellowship also provides fellows with access to apply for exclusive scholarship and post-graduate opportunities.
