Northwest recruiters attend 10th annual APEX summit
SENATOBIA, MS (05/31/2018) Eight Northwest Mississippi Community College student recruiters participated in the 10th Annual Community College APEX Leadership Summit May 20-22 at the University of Mississippi. Students from statewide community colleges participated in leadership training sessions throughout the weekend.
Dakota Kelso of Senatobia, JaDarrius Hodges of Walls, Zach Brown of Tunica, Lloyd Newson of Senatobia, Caley Lloyd of Vardaman, Elyse Jones of Senatobia, Marcus Suiter of Southaven and Montana Hussey of Hernando attended the summit with Abby Embrey, assistant director of Recruiting.
According to Embrey, the students participated in team-building exercises with other student leaders from community colleges all over the state. They learned leadership skills through activities such as a rope challenge. "My favorite thing about APEX is that no matter who you're paired with in a group, you have to work together to reach success. It's teaching you how you have to be in the real world," Brown said.
Hussey's team was chosen second place overall. She received an application fee waiver for Ole Miss, if she attends after Northwest. Jones was chosen Most Valuable Player (MVP) of her team and received a $250 scholarship for Ole Miss and since her team was chosen first place overall, she also received an application fee waiver and an orientation fee waiver should she chose to attend Ole Miss after Northwest. Kelso was also chosen as MVP of his team and received an orientation fee waiver for Ole Miss after Northwest. Hodges, who was also a member of the first-place overall team, received an application fee and orientation fee waiver from Ole Miss.
"My favorite part about APEX is the overall push that these student leaders are our future. Ole Miss does an excellent job of telling them their importance at their community college, their four-year university, and in their community. Our students always leave feeling more empowered to achieve what they want in life with the leadership skills to do so," Embrey said.
