Northwest's September art exhibit to feature work of alumna Anna Yates
SENATOBIA, MS (08/21/2018) Northwest Mississippi Community College's first fall art exhibition will feature the works of 2014 graduate Anna Yates.
The opening reception will be held on Thursday, Sept. 6 from 5-7 p.m., and the exhibition will run from Sept. 4 - 26 in the Northwest Art Gallery on the Senatobia campus.
Yates is an alumna of The Mississippi School of the Arts and Northwest, where she earned her Associate of Arts in 2015. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking from the University of Mississippi in 2017.
"The exhibit will feature a series of woodcut monoprints, a type of printmaking with elements that repeat throughout each piece, but aren't exactly the same. I'm very excited to be doing this solo exhibition because it allows me to return to the place that cemented my foundations in fine art education. An artist's work changes over time, but the things you learn at the beginning-the elements of design, what it means to truly see something-that stays with you throughout your entire career. Northwest is one of the places that taught me how to think about art," Yates said.
Yates' awards include the Roy Frank Finger Memorial Award in Printmaking and the Patricia Hopson Art Scholarship at the University of Mississippi in 2016. In 2015, she received the Portfolio Merit Scholarship at Ole Miss and in 2013 she received an Art Merit Scholarship at Northwest. At the Mississippi School of the Arts, she was honored with Academic Excellence awards in Drawing I, Drawing II, Sculpture and Painting II; Gold Keys, Silver Keys and Honorable Mentions in the Scholastic Art and Writing Competition for Drawing, Sculpture, Mixed Media, Printmaking and Artist's Portfolio.
Her work is featured in private collections in the SCG International Archives, Portland State University, Pacific Northwest College of Art and the Mississippi School of the Arts. She has been featured in group exhibitions at Ole Miss, the Mississippi Contemporary Art Center in Jackson, the SGCI Conference in Portland, Oregon, the DeSoto Arts Council, Northwest and in the Mississippi School of the Arts.
"From the very first moment I met Anna Yates and began working with her as one of my students; I knew that she would live up to and surpass every creative challenge the Art Faculty would set before her. Her tenacity combined with a superior creative ability; even challenged us as we worked to see that her art skills would grow. We are so very proud of Anna and are looking forward to her exhibit here at Northwest," said Lawayne House, art chair.
Gallery hours are 8 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. - noon, Fridays. Admission to the gallery is free.
