Nursing Student Awarded the Frank Lanza Scholarship through Phi Theta Kappa

BATAVIA, NY (04/04/2011)(readMedia)-- One outstanding Genesee Community College Nursing student with aspirations in midwifery has recently been awarded the prestigious Phi Theta Kappa Frank Lanza Scholarship for 2011.

Twenty six year old Christina Kranz will be one of 25 healthcare students to be recognized for the award on April 9 during the Third General Session of the Phi Theta Kappa Convention in Seattle, Washington.

Scholarships are named in honor of Frank Lanza, founder of L-3 Communications – a global aerospace and defense company. Lanza and his wife supported a variety of charities through a family foundation. The Phi Theta Kappa scholarships target part-time, full-time and international students who have completed 50 percent of their course work leading toward achieving an associate degree and who demonstrate financial need.

Christina was homeschooled in Conesus, NY and graduated in 2003. She says the Nursing program was the reason she chose to pursue her education at Genesee Community College.

"I was interested in GCC for a couple of reasons," she said. "First I was impressed with their Nursing Program which is what I was looking for, and secondly I really appreciated their campus centers. I attended my first two semesters in Dansville and Lakeville."

Currently, she remains enrolled as a nursing student and has already completed the College's Honors Program. "Being a midwife is my goal," she said. "I am not interested in it for a career, but for a ministry. I have had some experience assisting a midwife, and I know that I love it. I am interested in sharing my education and expertise in whatever location I am."

Christina says she especially enjoys working with the faculty at GCC.

"I can say that I have made great friends with a number of my instructors," she said. "I also like the variety among the students in both background and age. I have learned so much from interacting with my fellow students."
