DANVILLE , IL (03/05/2013)(readMedia)-- A group of students from Lakeview College of Nursing are collecting bras, selling t-shirts, and coordinating local monetary donations to support the battle against breast cancer.

Lynette Hosier of Champaign, IL; Kristin Schomburg of Danville, IL; Amy Richardson of Cisne, IL; Chelsea Rosnett of Clinton, IN; and Alexis Hasler of Rossville, IL are working together to raise funds and conduct a bra collection that will donate bras to breast cancer survivors and women in transitional shelters.

A couple of the students involved with this project have a loved one who has battled breast cancer. The grandmother of Hosier's boyfriend is a 15-year survivor while Richardson's sister was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago this April.

Rosnett said, "Being nurses, and females, this is a disease that we need to be familiar with, know what resources are available to our patients, and help raise awareness not only of the nature of the disease but how we can help victims and their families."

The group was also inspired by the Save the Ta-Tas organization, based in California. This organization has donated 100 t-shirts for the group to sell. Sales from these shirts will support the Save the Ta-Tas organization and the local area through the Provena Foundation.

An additional t-shirt design is being sold with all proceeds being directed to the Provena Regional Cancer Center. Order forms for these shirts are available at Lakeview College of Nursing, Provena United Samaritans Medical Center Gift Shop and Charter Fitness in Champaign, IL. All orders must be submitted by March 8 and t-shirts will be delivered by March 30.

Bras have been collected in donation boxes located at Lakeview College of Nursing. All bras donated will be sent to The Bra Recyclers, an Arizona company that will donate them to breast cancer survivors and women in transitional shelters.

A few local businesses have shown their support for the students' efforts. Downtown Diamond and Pawn has submitted a monetary donation while Genpact, Toyota of Danville, and a few other facilities have agreed to host a jeans' day. Employees who are participating in these events will donate $5 for a day they can wear jeans to work. All proceeds will be designated to the Provena Regional Cancer Center.
