Nursing Students Learn Basics on First Day

AIKEN, SC (08/30/2018) On their first day of nursing school, University of South Carolina Aiken nursing students learned how to properly wear protective medical gear, including masks, gowns, and gloves.

They also learned how to shave a male patient properly. To demonstrate the safest way, students used a balloon covered in shaving cream to simulate the patient. If they "shaved" the balloon without popping it, then they successfully shaved the "patient," without cutting him in the process. All the first-year nursing students passed the test.

These foundational skills are the building blocks for the rest of the very rigorous curriculum, according to School of Nursing faculty members.
