OGS to Mark Fall Season with Annual "Capitol Hauntings" Tours
Online Registration Now Open for This Spooktacular Look at New York State's Capitol
ALBANY, NY (09/19/2011)(readMedia)-- New York State Office of General Services (OGS) Commissioner RoAnn Destito today announced that OGS will give special tours of the New York State Capitol that explore the legends, folklore and "ghost stories" connected to this historic downtown Albany building. The annual "Capitol Hauntings" tours begin on Tuesday, October 11 and are free and open to the public. They will be offered Monday through Friday at 12:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. through October 31. Pre-registration is required for this popular event. Individuals and groups of ten or less may register online at www.ogs.ny.gov. Larger parties may call 473-7582 to register.
A Capital District favorite, follow the Capitol guides as they take you through the "hot spots" of the Capitol. Brave visitors will make their way to the exact spot where Samuel Abbot, the Capitol's night watchman, died in the catastrophic 1911 Capitol fire. Find out which two U.S. presidents visited the Capitol after they died. Explore the legend of the Capitol's "secret demon" near the Great Western Staircase. Learn about the Assembly Chamber's hidden murals and the tormented artist who created them. This hour-long tour has many spooky stops and offers lots of fascinating information.
The Capitol is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
