Olivia Sieg Receives Russell C. Hughes Endowed Scholarship for English

MILLERSVILLE, PA (06/06/2014)(readMedia)-- Olivia Sieg, New Oxford, Pa., has been selected to receive the Russell C. Hughes Endowed Scholarship for English. Sieg will graduate from Gettysburg Area High School and will attend Millersville University of Pennsylvania this fall to study towards her Bachelor of Science in Education in English.

The Russell C. Hughes Endowed Scholarship for English is awarded to a first-time, full-time freshman who possess a 3.0, or higher, grade point average with earned SAT critical reasoning and math scores of 1000, or higher, who plans to major in English. The recipients must also have been active as a staff member for school a publication. It is a renewable award in the amount of $831.50 per year.

Sieg pursued a traditional college preparatory curriculum that included numerous accelerated, advanced and Advanced Placement classes while maintaining good academic standing.

She played on her school soccer team all four years of high school and played on the field hockey team as a freshman and sophomore. In addition to her athletic involvement, Sieg was in the marching and concert bands, in which she held the position of clarinet section leader for the past two years. During her senior year she also was a member of the orchestra.

As a junior, Sieg served on her school's Mini-THON Committee and, during her senior year, served as president of this organization to benefit children with cancer and their families. She interned this year with an elementary school teacher, assisting students in their writing period. She is a four-time recipient of the Shining S.T.A.R. Award, for which she was nominated by her teachers. She received the award in accelerated English classes, philosophy/multicultural literature and French IV. She volunteers as a facilitator for the children's liturgy service at her church, and was a writer for her school newspaper and the literary magazine. Sieg will be the first member of her family to attend college.
