Operating Engineers Recruit Apprentices

RICHMOND HILL, NY (01/31/2010)(readMedia)-- The International Union of Operating Engineers, Local Union # 30 Apprenticeship Program, will conduct a recruitment from February 1, 2010 through February 12, 2010 for fifty stationary engineer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the Operating Engineers Local 30, 115-06 Myrtle Avenue, Richmond Hill, NY, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday during the recruitment period, excluding legal holidays. Application must be returned by CERTIFIED MAIL and postmarked by

March 5, 2010.

*A $25.00 testing fee must be sent with the completed application. U.S. Postal money orders are the only accepted forms of payment, made payable to: Local 30 Apprentice Training. Personal checks and cash will not be accepted.

* The testing fee will be waived if an applicant is indigent, on welfare or social services. It will be only waived if an applicant shows verifiable proof of indigence.

The Committee requires that applicants:

• Must be at least 18 years of age.

• Must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED) (verification of education along with corresponding transcripts requested at the time of acceptance).

• Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by the applicant's verbal statement.

• Must take an aptitude test which is administered by the New York State Department of Labor. In addition, the top 150 or so candidates will be given a comprehensive mathematics examination given by the Local Union #30.

• Must be legally able to work in the United States.

• Must have reliable transportation to and from job sites and related instruction.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
