Parks and Rec and Staunton City Schools Encouraging Family Fitness

Rousing Success at Bessie Weller Elementary School Family Fitness Night

STAUNTON, VA (01/11/2010)(readMedia)-- Over a hundred parents and children braved icy conditions to attend Bessie Weller's first Family Fitness Night on January 7th @ Bessie Weller Elementary School in Staunton, Virginia. This isn't the first time Staunton City School and Staunton Parks and Recreation have teamed up to promote exercise and wellness. Last year they organized the year long program, "Not Your Average Walk In the Park" where families recieved recognition as they passed walking milestones. The two organizations were also behind the Spring Fun Run and Walk for families. At Family Fitness Night, several area experts in fitness and health demonstrated a variety of physical fitness activities to enjoy together as a family.

Families rotated around 3 different fitness stations; Stretching with Honey Bear, Movement & Dance and Cup Speed Stacking. After the fitness stations, families then enjoyed healthy snacks before moving onto dodgeball and double dutch. During dodgeball, parents and teachers challenged the children only to be defeated from claimed lack of practice.

This is the first of several Family Fitness Nights which will be held at other Staunton City Schools. This happening was a great start for the Family Fitness Night series. The planners will build on the success and add new stations and activities for the upcoming organized fitness occasions. The event was co-sponsored by Staunton Recreation & Parks, Augusta Health and Bessie Boosters. For more information about upcoming FFN please call (540) 332-3945.
