Parolee Voting Positive Step; Let NY Vote Calls for Ealy Voting and Automatic Voter Registration

NEW YORK, NY (04/18/2018) (readMedia)-- Today, Governor Cuomo announced that he plans to restore voting rights to some people on parole.

In response, the Let NY Vote coalition issued the following statement:

"Today, Governor Cuomo signed an Executive Order setting up a procedure that should result in many tens of thousands of New Yorkers who are on parole having their voting rights restored: one of Let NY Vote's top 3 priorities, along with Early Voting (EV) and Automatic Voter Registration (AVR). We are excited to work with our partners, the National Action Network, Brennan Center for Justice, and VOCAL-NY to help implement the Governor's order, but this is a temporary fix. We need permanent, long term reforms that are non-discretionary so that a future Governor can't revoke them. Let NY Vote will continue to fight for our full package of voting reforms, and we hope that the Governor will be as committed to EV and AVR."
