Paul Smith's College students net three peer-reviewed articles so far this year
One study makes front-page news in The Wall Street Journal
PAUL SMITHS, NY (07/30/2015)(readMedia)-- A 2014 graduate of Paul Smith's College is the lead author of a paper on road runoff published recently by Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, an international scholarly journal.
The peer-reviewed scientific article is the second this year for Sean Regalado, who was biology major at Paul Smith's when he began the study last year. Regalado was also coauthor of a groundbreaking study on yellow perch, which was featured on the front page of The Wall Street Journal. And Paul Smith's senior Nathan Piché recently published a paper on soil recovery rates on abandoned farmland in Restoration Ecology, the journal of the Society for Ecological Restoration.
"Publishing a paper in a scientific journal is a spectacular achievement for any undergraduate student," said Cathy S. Dove, president of Paul Smith's College. "Having three students from our small student body do so in the same year is a testament to the wonderful faculty, staff and students we attract. We're always delighted to see our students achieve professional-level success."
The recent article by Regalado, who currently supervises the Adirondack Watershed Institute's Aquatic Invasive Species Rapid Response Team, details a new method for measuring the amount of road runoff on lands and waters. The study found that as much as 11 percent of land area, 77 percent of surface-water area, 33 percent of water bodies and 52 percent of stream length in the Adirondack Park could be harmed by road runoff.
