Paulina Maida of Hallstead Honored for Academic Achievement at University of Scranton Commencement

SCRANTON, PA (06/18/2012)(readMedia)-- Paulina Rita Maida, Hallstead, was among the 65 students honored by The University of Scranton during its undergraduate Class Night ceremony. The Jesuit university awarded outstanding members of the Class of 2012 for academic achievement and service.

Maida received the Kathryn and Bernard Hyland Memorial Award for Excellence in Biology. She earned a bachelor of science, summa cum laude, with a double major in biology and Hispanic studies, a double minor in history and biochemistry and a concentration in Latin American studies.

A full-tuition Presidential Scholar at Scranton, Maida was a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta, Alpha Epsilon Delta, Phi Lambda Upsilon, Phi Sigma Iota, Beta Beta Beta and Alpha Sigma Nu honor societies. She was a member of the Health Professions Organization, Students for Life, Se Habla Espanol and the Biology, Chemistry and Justice Clubs.

Maida served as a resident assistant, peer tutor for the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence, volunteer for the Leahy Center office and translator and coordinator for the Leahy Food Pantry. She also participated in the Faculty Student Research Program.

Maida plans to attend medical school to obtain her M.D. and M.P.H. degrees.

She graduated from Seton Catholic Central High School, Binghamton, N.Y.
