Philip Cowles Wins Fourth Place at International ASME Competition

LONGVIEW, TX (12/15/2010)(readMedia)-- Philip Cowles, a senior from Prescott Valley, Ariz. majoring in civil engineering concentration at LeTourneau University, was a member on the LETU team that won fourth place at the 2010 ASME "Earth Saver" student competition recently held at the Vancouver Convention and Exposition Centre in British Columbia, Canada.

Cowles was challenged to use his knowledge, creativity and problem solving skills to develop an autonomous system that sorts recyclable materials such as glass, metal, aluminum and plastic.

The students won first place in district competition previously in the fall to qualify to be one of the 15 schools ASME allowed to compete in the international competition. The competition was held in conjunction with the 2010 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition that brought together members of the engineering community to discuss technological advances. Other schools competing came from the United States, Canada, Turkey, Venezuela, China and Lebanon. Oregon State, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and McGill University in Canada won the top three slots, respectively.

ASME is a nonprofit professional organization that encourages sharing knowledge, skill development and collaboration across all engineering disciplines. Founded in 1880 as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the organization sets professional standards, publishes materials, and provides continuing education and professional development opportunities to advance technical knowledge.
