Physicians for Peace Announces New Members to its Board of Trustees
NORFOLK, VA (07/07/2010)(readMedia)-- Physicians for Peace, a Norfolk-based international non-profit organization focusing on medical education in the developing world, announced that four new members have joined its Board of Trustees, with terms beginning October 2. "Physicians for Peace has seen continued growth in its work to strengthen health care systems in developing countries," said Buzz Heidt, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Physicians for Peace. "We are excited that we can attract the level of talent to our Board of Trustees that these new members represent. Each of them will bring tremendous value to Physicians for Peace as we continue our important efforts to train health care workers around the globe." The new board members are:
Lawrence B. Colen M.D., F.A.C.S., is a plastic surgeon in Norfolk, Va. through his practice, Norfolk Plastic Surgery, P.C. He is Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery (Plastic & Reconstructive) and a former Residency Training Program Director at Eastern Virginia Medical School, also in Norfolk. In 1994, Dr. Colen was the first recipient of the National Godina Fellowship Award in Microsurgery. Dr, Colen is a board member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons as well as a Board Examiner.
Maurice Jones is President and Publisher of The Virginian-Pilot, a daily newspaper based in Norfolk, Va. He is the first African American publisher in the history of Landmark Communications which owns the newspaper. Jones has been a Rhodes Scholar, a corporate lawyer and a senior state official. He simultaneously served as commissioner of the Virginia Department of Social Services and deputy chief of staff under former Gov. Mark R. Warner. Jones joined Landmark in March 2005 and in 2008 was named to his current post.
Carmen Hooker Odom, M.R.P., is currently President of the Milbank Memorial Fund, a New York-based foundation that conducts nonpartisan analysis, study, and research on significant issues in health policy. Prior to joining the Fund in 2007, she was appointed the Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services by Governor Mike Easley in January 2001. Ms. Hooker Odom, a former Massachusetts lawmaker and healthcare lobbyist, has spent her professional life working in health and human services.
Ivan (Van) R. Sabel, C.P.O., is Chairman of the Hanger / Ivan R. Sabel Foundation in Bethesda, Md. Mr. Sabel has served as Hanger Orthopedic Group's Chairman of the Board of Directors since 1995 and was Hanger's Chief Executive Officer from 1995 until 2008. Sabel, who has served as the founder and visionary leader of the modern-era Hanger organization since the 1960s, wanted to build on that legacy - and transform it into the core of the world's preeminent philanthropic force in the prosthetics and orthotics field. This legacy of his generosity was the inspiration for the Hanger Ivan R. Sabel Foundation.
Also re-elected to the Board was Eid B. Mustafa, M.D., F.A.C.S. of Wichita Falls, Tx.
