Pie Perfection Sought in State Fair Baking Contest

DES MOINES, IA (08/19/2021) (readMedia)-- Anita Van Gundy of Des Moines won first place and a $200 cash award in the North "40" Pie Contest, judged Sunday, August 15, at the 2021 Iowa State Fair.

Elise Goodman of Des Moines earned second place and $125. Belinda Myers of Osceola claimed third place and $75.

Judges also awarded Honorable Mention to Susie Jones of Winterset.

Entries were judged on flavor, consistency, appearance and crust.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 134 divisions, 603 classes and nearly 6500 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Urban Air.


The Iowa State Fair is one of the oldest and largest agricultural and industrial expositions in the country and the single largest event in the state. The Fair began over 160 years ago and is now considered one of the best events in the nation, attracting more than one million Fairgoers every year from all over the world.
