Pies from the Heartland Win at State Fair

DES MOINES, IA (09/16/2024) (readMedia)-- The best pie bakers from across the state put their top creations to the test in the Pies from the Heartland Competition judged Monday, August 12 at the 2024 Iowa State Fair.

Keri Crowley of Indianola won First Place Overall – Cream Pie and a $200 cash award.

Crowley also won Second Place Overall – Cream Pie and a $175 cash award as well as Third Place Overall – Cream Pie and a $125 cash award.

Keri Crowley of Indianola also claimed First Place Overall – Fruit Pie and a $200 cash award.

Jodi Hilleman of Rhodes won Second Place Overall – Fruit Pie and a $175 cash award.

Marcia Miller of Des Moines earned Third Place Overall – Fruit Pie and a $125 award.

Miller also won the Sweepstakes Award and Crowley earned the Reserve Sweepstakes Award.

Entries were judged on filling, quality of crust, appearance and originality.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There were 140 divisions, 726 classes and nearly 6,400 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center.
