ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (01/28/2012)(readMedia)-- Piffaro, defined as the nation's finest Renaissance wind band, graces the Leffler Chapel and Performance Center stage at Elizabethtown College at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, as part of Gretna Music's Intersections -- An Exploration of Classical Music and the Dance series.
Tickets for the concert, open to the public, are $15 to $25.
World renowned for its highly polished performances as the pied pipers of Early Music, Piffaro also is active in education and workshops, collaborating in the research and making of historically based instruments and programs, and as experts in reed making and Renaissance performance practice.
Especially for this performance, the band will add Renaissance dancers to "trip the light fantastic toe" in a spectacular exploration of music and dance as they were at the Rebirth of Western Civilization.
Founded in 1980, Piffaro is modeled after the official civic, chapel and court bands that were the premier professional ensembles from the 14th into the early 17th centuries. Their ever-expanding instrumentarium includes shawms, sackbuts, dulcians, recorders, krumhorns, bagpipes, lutes, guitars, harps, and a variety of percussion - all careful reconstructions of instruments from the period.
