Elizabethtown College Faculty Member Susan Mapp's New Textbook Offers Compelling Look at Worldwide Threats to Child Well-Being

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (10/28/2010)(readMedia)-- Susan Mapp's treatise on international threats to child welfare, "Global Child Welfare and Well-Being," is being hailed by experts as the sourcebook for those interested in learning about child welfare and global social issues. The book is a follow-up to the Elizabethtown College faculty member's pioneering textbook, "Human Rights and Social Justice in a Global Perspective: An Introduction to International Social Work," which was among the first textbooks to explore issues in international social work. Both books are published by Oxford University Press, the world's largest university publisher.

"Global Child Welfare and Well-Being" offers a compelling look at various threats to child well-being around the world and investigates violations of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. In this book, Mapp explores issues such as child trafficking, child soldiers, unethical adoption practices and fistulas. No other book approaches these important topics in such a comprehensive, yet tightly structured, way-using an established, agreed-upon set of principles to show how things stand now, what remains to be accomplished, and examples of how these problems might be resolved.

Susan C. Mapp, Ph.D., MSSW, is department chair and associate professor of social work at Elizabethtown College. Before joining the College's faculty in 2003, Mapp worked in the social work field for almost a decade in positions with DePelchin Children's Center in Houston, Texas; Fort Bend Family Health Center in Stafford, Texas; the U.S. Army in Grafenwöhr, Germany; and the Council on Sex Offender Treatment in Austin, Texas. In 2005, she was selected to participate in a prestigious Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad program to Thailand and Myanmar. Mapp has published and presented her research internationally in peer-reviewed journals and scholarly conferences. She earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and religion from Trinity University, a master's degree in social work from the University of Texas at Austin, and a doctorate in social work from the University of Houston.
