Poet Millar visits Flagler College as part of Writers-in-Residence program

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (09/23/2013)(readMedia)-- "We live so much of our lives without telling anyone," writes Joseph Millar in his poem "Telephone Repairman." But on Thursday, October 3 at 7 p.m., Millar will visit Flagler College to tell at least parts of his life-the parts about writing poetry, teaching creative writing, and-possibly-working as a telephone repairman.

"If you want the real news of how America lives, of what it's like to be here with us . . . Millar will tell you with exactitude and delicacy in poems like none you've read before," wrote Pulitzer prize-winning poet Philip Levine. "He knows a country, an America, that's been here all along waiting for its voice. It's time we listened."

Millar, a resident of Raleigh, North Carolina, is an award-winning poet who currently teaches in Pacific University's Low Residency MFA program. Millar grew up in Pennsylvania, attended the Johns Hopkins Writing Seminars and spent 30 years in the San Francisco Bay area.

In 2012, Carnegie-Mellon Press published Millar's newest collection, "Blue Rust." His first collection, "Overtime" (2001) was a finalist for the Oregon Book Award and a second collection, "Fortune," appeared in 2007. His work has won fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts as well as a Pushcart Prize. Poems have appeared in such magazines as "DoubleTake," "The Southern Review," "TriQuarterly," "APR" and "Ploughshares."

Millar's poetry reading and discussion will be held in the Gamache-Koger Theater at the Ringhaver Student Center at 50 Sevilla Street. The event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited and is on a first-come, first-served basis.
