Potsdam Piano Quartet Performs at Crane School of Music Sept. 17

Double bassist John Geggie will perform alongside pianist Cullan Bryant at the Potsdam Piano Quartet concert on Sept. 17.

POTSDAM, NY (09/10/2014)(readMedia)-- SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music will present the Potsdam Piano Quartet in concert on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater.

The concert will feature works by Louise Farrenc and Johannes Brahms.

A piano quartet is a musical group that is made up of a piano and three or more other instruments. Performing alongside Cullan Bryant on piano are: John Lindsey, violin; Shelly Tramposh, viola; Mathias Wexler, cello, and John Geggie, bass. Both Bryant and Geggie are guest artists.

About the guest artists:

Cullan Bryant is among the most active chamber and collaborative pianists in New York City, maintaining a schedule of over 70 recitals a year. He has performed with a number of talented artists, as well as members of the American, Arcata and Borromeo quartets. Bryant has also appeared in recitals with members of the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Luke's and many more, in such venues as Weill Recital Hall, Merkin Hall, Alice Tully Hall, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Detroit's Orchestra Hall. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1992, in recital with violinist Patmore Lewis. Bryant has made a number of festival appearances in Spain, France and the United States. Additionally, he has been on the faculty of the Academy of Music Summer Festival since 1999. Bryant began playing the piano at age two, giving his first public recital at age six. At eleven, he toured campuses in his native Arkansas and in Texas, including several televised recitals. His prizes and awards include the Leschetizky International Competition, the National Arts Club of New York, the Memphis Beethoven Competition, the Miami Arts Competition and a certificate of outstanding citizenship from Arkansas Governor Frank White. His college studies were with Robert Goldsand and Artur Balsam at the Manhattan School of Music. In 2002, he toured Japan in recitals with violinist Midori.

John Geggie is an internationally known musician and composer. He has toured with the award winning jazz group Chelsea Bridge, and the Juno-nominated DD Jackson Trio. He has also collaborated with a number of influential musicians, including Jon Christensen, Andy Milne, Ben Monder, Craig Taborn, David Mott, Sheila Jordan, David Murray, Andrew Cyrille, Donny McCaslin, Matt Brubeck, Ted Bash, Billy Hart, Marilyn Crispell, Myra Melford, Cuong Vu, Peter Lutek, Marilyn Lerner, Peggy Lee, Justin Haynes, Jean Martin and double bassist Mark Dresser. He attended Indiana University, where he studied with David Baker, the renowned jazz pedagogue. He also studied with Gary Peacock, Palle Danielsson and Anders Jormin. Geggie has hosted the Late Night Jam Sessions at the Ottawa International Jazz Festival. Additionally, he has performed at festivals in France, Norway and throughout the United States.
