Preservation Grants Available to Aid Cultural Resources

The Sodus Bay Historical Society in Wayne County received TAG funding in Spring 2014 for a conditions survey of the 1870s Sodus Bay Lighthouse on Lake Ontario. It attracts some 25,000 visitors a year.

ALBANY, NY (07/18/2014)(readMedia)-- Applications are now available to eligible municipalities and not-for-profit organizations to compete for Technical Assistance Grants (TAG), a statewide program of the Preservation League of New York State and the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA).

A total of $15,673 is available in the Fall grant round to provide support for projects that preserve New York State's cultural and historic resources. Applications are due on August 25.

Grant amounts will not exceed $3,000 and the total cost of the applicant's project may not exceed $3,500. Each applicant must provide $500 toward the total project cost.

Not-for-profit arts/cultural groups and municipalities managing arts/cultural facilities are encouraged to apply. The applicant group may apply for short-term, discrete projects that advance the preservation of historic sites, museums, opera houses and theaters, arts facilities and other culturally important institutions that are located in historic buildings and structures that are open to the public. These professional studies include: building conditions surveys, engineering/structural analyses, feasibility/reuse studies and specialized building conservation studies. Preparation of architectural plans and specifications are not eligible.

TAG support was awarded to 10 organizations or municipalities in in the first funding round of 2014: Chenango County: Earlville Opera House Inc.; Columbia County: Shaker Museum | Mount Lebanon; Greene County: Athens Cultural Arts Center; Hamilton County: Sagamore Institute of the Adirondacks, Inc.; Livingston County (2): Livingston County Historical Society, Town of Portage; Oswego County: H. Lee White Marine Museum; Rensselaer County: Arts Center of the Capital Region; Schoharie County: Town of Blenheim; Wayne County: Sodus Bay Historical Society.

The Technical Assistance Grant program is made possible through funding from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
